Through the interpretative lens of each artist, the event has offered spectators a different way of thinking and an alternative way of reflecting: moving towards possible new dimensions through the suspension of disbelief.
Monica Canilao, a young American artist living and working in Oakland, California, has exhibited in many prominent galleries. At Wunderkammern, she has shown 6 works that have been specially created for Suspension of Disbelief. The salvaged objects and compositional richness of her works retrace the artist’s own life experience with a fusion of passions, a reworkings of history, a newborn mythology and the inspiration from everyday life.
Escif is a Spanish street artist internationally renown who works in anonymity. For the first time in Rome, thanks to Wunderkammern, Escif considered his art to be an all-encompassing project involving every phase and every person related to the context in which he works, called in fact “Escif Project”. His intervention on the wall directly opposite the gallery therefore create maximum interaction with those who look at it, speak to it. The observer can believe in his imagination.
Emiliano Ponzi is an Italian visual artist who collaborates with some of the most important national and international newspapers. The New York Times considers him one of the most influential Italian artists in the world and in April 2012, organised a tribute to his work at Gallery 7 in New York. Ponzi has won many international awards such as the Art Directors Club Young Guns and gold medal at the Society of Illustrators of America. At Wunderkammern, he presented the new work, created especially for Suspension of Disbelief, “Sunrise Hotel”: ‘exceedingly untidy corridors of stories for the pleasure of seeing without being seen’, with prints and an installation project in collaboration with Giacomo Benelli.
Peter Fend, born in Ohio in 1950, founded an environmental artistic movement, the “Ocean Earth Development Corporation” in 1980: a mixture of conceptual art, activism and entrepreneurship. Fend starts from the idea that the world is a living construction site, whose ecological aspects are linked and interwoven with those of art. At Wunderkammern, he presented his famous maps and an “upside-down Italy.”
The collaboration of KINO was also present at the event, with a refined range of videos related to the suspension of disbelief in cinema.
